Cleaning klister (and other how-to clips!)

After last week’s jam-packed klister extravaganza, many MNC families might still be dealing with lots of sticky, goopy skis…

Now, you definitely don’t want to spend all winter with your skis like that! Cleaning klister can actually be pretty simple. Many people have nightmares about sticky wax everywhere, but there are some really great videos out there showing proper care techniques. Boulder Nordic Sport has a really well-produced video on this subject, as well as many other ski prep topics both for skate and classic. Check out the whole playlist here:

While the ski-specific product known as “fiberlene” is great, old rags work just fine too. Paper towels will do in a pinch, but the true champion of this process are the good old blue “shop towels” available at many hardware stores.

If you hate sticky hands, the best way to get klister off your hands is with a mechanic’s cleaner such as “GoJo” or a similar non-brand name hand cream.

Dedicated wax removers are great, but if you are in a pinch you can get by with household cleaners like “Goo Gone” or other citrus-based solvents.

Happy cleaning!

Stowe Nordic Enduro Recap

BKL Winter 16-17

Six enthusiastic BKL kids and three fearless coaches braved the cold morning temps to do the Stowe Nordic Enduro!  This was a new event format where we skied the 10km in five segments, three timed with untimed easy ski breaks (and snacks!) in between.  While this was sort of a race, it was more like intervals with snack stops and as much rest in between as you felt like taking!  The second food stop was definitely the best with cookies, cider and s’mores with marshmallows roasted over the campfire!  The course had great cover, lots of fun descents and a double pole section on single track through the woods. No wind, multiple layers, and hand warmers kept us warm and everyone had a great time! Definitely a fun event to put on your calendar for next year! Hats off to Riley who was the youngest competitor to complete the 10 km course. Great job also to Virginia, Julia, Taylor, Brady, Cole, Coach Eden, Coach Luke, Coach Rosemary and Brad Carlson!

Practice This Week:

Tuesday: Don’t scrape off Thursday’s purple klister yet because we’re going CLASSIC again and it will probably be just the thing to use on Tuesday, covered with a little warm hard wax!

Thursday:  SKATE! Pack a raincoat and dry socks.

Friday Foxes: Friday Foxes are planned to be on at the Range at 3;45.  Contact Eden (eden_shullenberg@hotmail.com) with questions.

3-Day Program Skiers: SATURDAY10- 11:30 Practice at the Range. Skate Technique. Guest Coach Rick Costanza (Rosemary gone to Waterville EC). Check back on Friday to be sure the venue hasn’t changed.

Masters, Juniors, and BKL at Race to the Cabin

It was great to see so many MNC members out in force at the Trapps Race to the Cabin on Saturday! Blue skies and blue wax made for a memorable day. While results are forthcoming, it’s safe to say that our club was the biggest single group out there, and many of our racers skied strong and fast. What’s more, we had several members tackle their first races ever! This is a good sign of the season to come as MNC seeks to take on the hunt for the Zak and Club Cup trophy!

This week, conditions should be great at the Range on Tuesday. The weather may turn a bit foul, so stay tuned for updates on the Masters Google Doc and Range Snow Report pages!

On Monday, Masters have a great opportunity to compete again with the Geschmossel Classic! This event is a distance classic race on the beautiful rolling trails of Bretton Woods, NH. Be sure to check it out and consider taking part!

Juniors across the continent

We are into the real meat of the race season, and this week MNC athletes were spread across the continent racing fast and putting the hours of hard training to use!

In the wild wild west of Utah, MNC racers and friends like Brandon Herhusky, Greg Burt, Conor Munns, Adam Glueck, and the illustrious Harmeyer bros have been busy taking deeps breaths at altitude while competing at Senior Nationals. So far the races have been a 10/15km skate race on Saturday and a classic sprint today. More to come this week as competition is tight for U18 Scando, World Junior, and U23 trip qualification.

To the North of us in Quebec, Timmy and Eliza have busted out the guns yet again for a round or NorAm races at Valcartier. Results pending…

Closer to home, a big high school meet took place on Saturday at Craftsbury, as a medley relay (classic, classic, skate, skate) pitted some of the top HS teams in the state against one another. MNC athletes skied lots of strong legs, such as young pugs Sammie Nolan and Ali Priganc teaming up as scramble and anchor legs, respectively, for MMU gals team #1. Marika led the way for the Seahorses, making a strong return to classic skiing after a victory in another HS race earlier in the week.

Eli Grossman carried the torch for the SB team, while Sammy Leo and Kai Richter helped the MMU men’s team to the podium. Alex Warner led off for the U-32 men’s team who found themselves in second place, while Baxter Bishop anchored the CVU men to a massive 3+ minute victory. Baxter has now completed a hat trick of winning the first 3 high school races in a row…a skate race, a classic race, and a relay, no less!

Familiar MNC names went 1-2-3-4 (!) in the middle school girls race, as Quincy, Camille, Ava and Hattie skied a great mass start to take home impressive finishes. Aidan Burt continued his strong season with a victory in the boys event as well.

Finally, a group of MNC Juniors enjoyed bright sun and great tracks at Trapps for the annual Race to the Cabin. A frigid morning gave way to the flawless blue hardwax skiing so absent last year. While the race was a low-key event, it was a chance for Will, Ben, and Magda to hone their striding skills they worked so hard on this fall.
