Co-op Photos and Recap

Thanks to Gary Solow for getting some excellent photos from our time-trial last weekend!

Last Saturday we hosted the first Central VT Nordic Co-op event of the winter: classic sprints at Breadloaf! Thanks to Mike Hussey and his crew at the ski center, the athletes had a ~600m loop of manmade snow that allowed us to put on an informal event. Athletes in attendance came from Middlebury College, Woodstock HS, GMVS, Middlebury HS, and Mansfield Nordic Club. Overall we had approximately 40 participants on a day that was a bit soggy. In spite of the non-stop wet snow falling, the conditions were actually very good with athletes either using klister (Rex OI + Swix Silver), or else using “zeroes”.

The goal of the Co-op events is to augment the Eastern Cup / High School race calendar with informal races that promote learning and gaining experience in a setting that is low stress, but still features competitive skiers. Many high school athletes never (or rarely) get to ski in the head-to-head sprint heats, so our Co-op event guaranteed that every participant would get to ski at least 2 heats. By the end of the day, most of the athletes actually skied 3 heats in addition to their qualifier. The Co-op events are coordinated by the coaches themselves (Justin Beckwith at GMVS, Cam Mackugler at Frost Mtn, Nick Mahood at Woodstock and Tim Weston at MNC). We are proud of the fact that these events are nearly always free. The only fee associated with our sprint race over the weekend was the nominal trail fee at Breadloaf.

MNC athletes did great although I was mostly busy organizing and timing. Below are some pictures of our MNC crew, and Gary Solow has another 70-80 photos available at this address:

Results from GMVS 5/10km skate time trial

Yesterday we had a crew travel down to Waitsfield for our first big Central VT Coop event of the fall: a 5km/10km skate time-trial. Along with athletes from GMVS, Burke Mtn Academy and Ford Sayre, MNC athletes were greeted by a gorgeous fall day in the Mad River Valley, a tough course, and some delicious American Flatbread pizza!

The courses are point-to-point; both courses start on East Warren Road and finish with a ~1.2km climb up Plunkton Rd. Conditions were basically perfect with brilliant sunshine, dry roads and temp around 60*.

Overall I was really amazed by these performances from all of the MNC boys! Ethan, Bill and Henry all participated last Fall and all 3 of them smashed their old PR’s by at least a minute. Conor Munns — who is technically still a BKL’er — had a time that was nearly 40 seconds faster than the 5km course record (set last year by future Junior National Champion Forrest Hamilton)… and Conor finished 4th in the event. Will Solow threw down a blistering 12:58 and when he crossed the finish line he remarked “damn, I thought I had longer to go…I could’ve gone way harder!”

Overall it was just an awesome day to see some former teammates, future teammates, friends and to ski on some different roads.

5km (U16 boys):

  1. Will Solow (MNC) 12:58
  2. Adam Glueck (Ford Sayre) 13:13 (26th place in 2014 Junior National 5km skate)
  3. Walker Bean (GMVS) 13:14
  4. Conor Munns (MNC) 13:49
  5. Ellito Ketchel (GMVS) 13:54
  6. Tim Regan (Burke) 17:41

10km (U18/U20 boys/U23 boys): [time from Oct’13 and Nov’13 in brackets]

  1. David Sinclair (GMVS U23) 27:55
  2. Ian Moore (GMVS PG) 28:07
  3. Nick Gardner (GMVS PG) 28:51
  4. Henry Harmeyer (MNC) 28:58 [30:37 / 30:16]
  5. Bill Harmeyer (MNC) 28:59 [32:58 / 33:30]
  6. Forrest Hamilton (GMVS/MNC) 29:42

  8. Ethan John (MNC) 31:24 [34:13]

Inaugural Bolton Hillclimb TT Results

We’ve been training in the Bolton-area more frequently this year — including rollerskiing up the Access Rd as well as hiking and doing intervals on the ski hill. Today we took the next step and went from workout to time-trial: the athletes ran/hiked up the dirt road from the base-area (start at the Waffle Shack) and climbed approx 950′ over the course of ~1.45 miles to finish at the top of the Vista Quad chairlift (near the turbine). At the end we had some cider and donuts to cap-off a great start to the weekend!
