BKL Practice: 1/29-2/03/19

Tuesday 1/29: SKATE  (Penguins: Classic)

Jack Rabbits: Coach Andy is away, Coaches Peter, Emilie and Amanda Repp will lead the show! Count on some fun games, a little agility and lots of skiing!

Arctic Foxes: It’s time to learn some V-2 Alternate and play a game of “Stones”

Racers: Older racers will practice some sprints. Younger racers will work on V-2 alternate. Racers will join the Foxes for “Stones” at the end of practice.

Thursday 1/31: CLASSIC

Bundle up today, it is supposed to be in the single digits! Hats instead of headbands, mittens instead of gloves, buffs, hand warmers and insulated jackets are good ideas!

All groups will keep moving today and we’ll try to get some hot chocolate going inside to help kids warm up when they come in. You can count on some touring, but we may stick to some shorter loops so we don’t get too far from shelter.

Weekend Racing: Craftsbury Marathon 2/2 & 2/3

It’s a crazy weekend of racing for Middle School Racers with the Tour de Chittenden and for Biathletes with the Jericho NorAM.  No regular BKL races, but there is the option of doing a BKL 15 km Craftsbury Marathon. Classic on Saturday or Skate on Sunday, your choice. BKL skiers need a chaperone to ski with them. If your child plans to do it, register on SKIREG by 1/30 (Wed). Great post race meal included!

BKL Practice 1/22- 1/27/19

Tuesday 1/22: Classic for Everyone

It’s going to be a perfect classic day- cold with lots of powder! Get ready for some fun touring and downhills! If the trail to the alpine hill is groomed, Arctic Foxes and Racers will head there for some downhill practice in the powder.

It looks like the high will be about 11F, so bundle up. I am looking for a parent to monitor the Walker Building so we can send kids inside to warm up. If you can help, email Coach Rosemary.

Wax will be Toko Blue or Swix Green or Blue.

Thursday 1/24: Skate

Hopefully the groomers at the Range will be able to pack out the fields by today and we’ll be able to play some games. Arctic Foxes and Racers may play a game of Stones!

Older Racers skiing up with the Juniors should check the Junior Training Doc to confirm technique for today.

Sunday, 1/ 27: Mt. Top Paintball Race

Racers and anyone who wants to race! This race at the Mt. Top Touring Center is always a blast. See the Event Listing for all the details. Coach Rosemary will be on hand to help kids warm up and get oriented. Registration on Ski Reg is open through Friday.  Email Coach Rosemary if your child is going.

BKL Practice 1/15- 1/20/19

This should be a good week for skiing at the Range with new snow and cold temps last weekend to help set things up.

Tuesday 1/15: Classic for Everyone!

A high of 27F is forecasted meaning the kick wax should be  Toko Red or Swix Extra Blue (V40) or possibly Special Purple (V45).

Thursday 1/17: Skate for Everyone!

Saturday 1/19: Race: Silver Fox Trot

Note: All BKL races are open to all kids who want to race (not just “Racers”). There are age group racers from lollipop (K & under) up to 8th grade.

This year’s Fox Trot will be held at Rikert Touring Center in Ripton.  The Fox Trot is a classic race for grades 1&2, but a SKATE race for everyone else. It will feature traditional BKL distances for the different age groups. Get more info and register (by 1/17)  on SKI REG and email Coach Rosemary to let her know you are coming. Day of race registration also available (extra fee).

The trails at Rikert are beautiful and worth the trip! Many families make a day of it, watching and racing in the morning, then skiing together and with friends after races.

BKL Practice Update 1/08

Range trails will be closed on Tuesday. We will go with Plan B: Mill River Park. Bring your headlamp and I will bring a few lanterns to light the field when it gets dark.

Base is too thin at the Range. Let’s hope for a little more snow before Thursday. Thursday’s Plan B will be Bolton Valley Nordic Center.

BKL Practice 1/07- 1/13/19

Tuesday 1/08:

Check back here before you leave, because it’s one of those “iffy” weather days: snow changing to rain, changing back to snow or maybe not much of anything- it’s anyone’s guess!

Plan A:  Ski at the Range. Classic for Penguins, Skate for everyone else. Bring rock skis if you have them, base is thin.

Plan B: If the Range is closed for whatever reason, we will go to Mill River Park and ski in the fields there. To get to Mill River Park: Drive past the road to the Range and past MMU high school. At Rte. 15, turn right. MR Park entrance is on the right, a short ways up the road, opposite the Jolley’s.

Thursday 1/10:

Classic!  Temps are getting colder and we’ll hope the forecast is accurate in providing us with a little fresh snow.

*We need someone to monitor the Walker Building today so we can send cold kids inside to warm up. Please email Rosemary if you can help: sheacobb19@gmail.com

Racers:  Saturday 1/12: Bogburn Classic!

A fun race at the Haydock Family Farm in Pomfret, where the race features old time, narrow classic trails through the woods.   If snow conditions aren’t good at the Farm, the race may be moved to Woodstock.  Get more info HERE. Please pre-register on Ski-Reg  to avoid the $5 DOR fee. In addition,  they will email updates to all those pre-registered about any changes to race times and location. Please plan to arrive 90 minutes before race time to get your skis kick-waxed and your self oriented and warmed-up.
