BKL Festival Recap!

Mother Nature was good to us at the BKL Festival this weekend at Rikert Touring Center in Ripton, VT this weekend.  Temperatures hovered around 30 degrees Farenheight on both days and although this did make the classic waxing a bit tricky, it was a great temperature for ski racing, spectating, and spending the day outside.

The BKL Pugs were there in full force: 20 of them plus  5 MMU middle school skiers who joined us for the weekend. Rikert & Frost Mountain Nordic Club did a great job hosting this huge event and making it fun. Nearly 500 skiers participated! The opening parade with kids dressed in animal hats and costumes, the LLBean Boot Mobile, the Taco Truck, the Glitter Zone and world class announcer Peter Graves all added to the Festival atmosphere.

The opening parade with Ryley, Kate, Pippa, Tessa & Julia.

Saturday was the Classic Relay. Coaches Adam, Sara & Rick all came down to help with the waxing. With all these coaches we were able to test waxes, keep on top of changing conditions, and get each skier waxed with good kick. Meanwhile, our regular BKL coaches were able to help kids learn the course, warm up and get to the starting line on time. Thanks to all the coaches for a great job!

MNC skiers looked great today and even more importantly, they all had fun! Liam Vile skied the 1/2 relay and remained cool and flexible when he had to change relay partners at the last minute.  Kate Carlson and Ryley Morigeau skied away with the win in the girls 3/4 race with Astrid Longstreth and Frost Mountain’s Violet Anderson not far behind in 4th and Tessa Diller and Julia Cisz right behind in 5th.  Pippa Diller and Ella Cisz teamed up and skied well in the girls 5/6 relay. In the boys 5/6 relay, Niko Cuneo teamed up with FMN’s Matt Macintosh and landed a 4th place. Zander Lubkowitz teamed up with a couple of FMN boys and Dylan Torrizo and Matteo Dezon-Gaillard partnered for  the quick 2 km race. We had eight 7/8 girls and their relay was very exciting to watch.  Greta Kilburn, Virginia Cobb, Rachel Porth and Finley Barker all started together for the first leg. Greta tagged off to Esther Cuneo who put the hammer down and passed about four speedy skiers to finish in second place. Rachel tagged off to Carly Trapeni who finished in 8th and Finley tagged off to Julia Thurston who came in close behind in 10th place, while Virginia tagged off to Mia Diller. In the boys 7/8 race, we had Adrian Dezon-Gaillard teaming up with Baxter Harrington from FMN and Carl Priganc teaming up with Taylor Carlson, who passed an impressive seven skiers on his finishing lap!

But races were not all that was happening that day: paintball biathlon, ski jumping, and the glitter zone where enjoyed throughout the day.  After the races, we put away the wax tools and everyone who was up for it- kids, parents & coaches- put on their skis for the mini-marathon! Usually there is a destination and food involved and this year was no exception. We skied to Borgen Cabin where Sunrise Orchard owners Barny and Chris Hodges were serving hot cider and donuts! Yum!

Sunday dawned with beautiful sunshine and a couple of inches of fresh snow. We set up camp under our MNC tent once again for the Individual Freestyle races. The freestyle day is always a little easier for coaches so we were all able to get out and see a little more of the races and spend a little more time with the skiers. Today also featured the Eighth Grade Graduation and the Lollipop races, aka, the cutest thing on skis!

Dylan Torrizo just learned to skate ski this year and just look at that great form!

Astrid smiling her way to the finish!

All our skiers skied really well once again and pulled out some impressive results.  It was really great to see what these young skiers can do and to watch them put all the things we’ve been working on this year into practice. Those that have been racing for years keep steadily improving and those that have just started racing have made huge leaps and bounds. Seeing smiles at the finish line and hearing “that was so much fun!” keep me inspired and let me know that we are doing something right in our  program. I think all these kids will be back for more and because of them, so will I!

BKL Fest, Coach-view

This past weekend I got to experience a different kind of race weekend. For the first time in recent memory, the BKL Festival didn’t overlap with a Junior race or some other engagement. After a string of busy, stressful, and chaotic race weekends, Sara, Rick and I were able to head down to Rikert and do wax support and race-day action involving ears on hats, parades, cider and doughnut missions, and a real party on snow.

Man, THIS is the kind of thing that makes New England skiing so great! Actually, you can say that about so many aspects of our skiing world, from this youngest level all the way up to the Masters racing scene. I often get to see all the fun our BKL skiers are having at the Range, but seldom do I get to watch them race other than the Skiathlon or a few other overlapping events. It was a ton of fun to see such strong efforts, and there was a real vibe of fun and joy even during the races themselves.

The true testament of such an infectious attitude? I was staying at my mother’s house in nearby Ferrisburgh for the weekend…after the first day, I came home raving about the day and sharing all the photos from Dave Priganc. Before long my mom had dug out the old photo albums and was riffling through photos from some of my trips to various BKL Festivals of years (and millennia?) past: namely Notchview in 2001 and Waterville Valley in gasp 1999. The oldest skiers at this year’s festival were still not even born yet when I was “competing” at those festivals, but it’s fun to look at the old festival packets they printed out and pick out some familiar participant names…Sophie Caldwell, Ida Sargent, Alex Howe…

Whether or not some of the top names at the 2019 BKL Fest will be on the World Cup in 10 years remains to be seen. But the cool part is looking at many other names who aren’t on the World Cup but are still involved in the ski world…a few names you may have heard of:

Cross Country Skier Magazine editor Danny Kuzio, Skida founder Corrine Prevot, current coaches like Anna Schultz (Craftsbury), Kate Barton (Midd), Perry Thomas (UVM), Jake Barton (Craftsbury), Shane MacDowell (NYSEF)…

When you have a sport that brings so many different people together beyond just racing fast, you can bet that many of this year’s festival participants will be skiers for life, taking the sport in all sorts of new and exciting directions!

Brady arrived on Sunday after a very successful swim meet Saturday. He threw down a fast race…

…but wasn’t afraid to throw out the tongue mid-race!

Is it possible to find a photo of the Carlson siblings without awesome technique? Kate and Taylor must’ve picked up some more Scando-tips since they just got back from skiing in Norway over break!

The weekend was also a chance to see that next generation of Eastern Cup competitors! The 7/8 field is a mix of athletes, some of whom are U16s headed to Junior Nationals already. Our club has some strong athletes who are headed in that direction next year, and after the races on Sunday there was already a buzz about all the training that we were going to do over the summer to take another step forward in 2019/2020. Of course, you also had the really cool “graduation” ceremony where these athletes were honored as they transition up. Congrats!

Some of next year’s Juniors!

There are SO MANY more great photos on Dave’s Flickr site…be sure to check it out!

The final element this weekend helped me see in yet another new light was just how great our coaches are for helping provide the right environment for MNC to bring out the best in young athletes. It isn’t always easy to ski in the cold day-in and day-out, and we all know the Range isn’t the most family-friendly place to ski. But we’ve got a ton of creative coaches who make it happen. When you see everyone together embracing skiing, that creativity and dedication really shows. THANK YOU to Rosemary and ALL of our BKL coaches!

BKL Craftsbury Day!

Tessa, Dylan, Mia, Pippa, Carly and Virginia top the hill!

It was a cold day for our trip up to Craftsbury this year. Seven hardy BKLers bundled up, waxed their classic skis and headed out on Ruthie’s Run to enjoy the beautiful classic tracks and trails at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.  It is such a beautiful place to ski and the grooming is always perfect!

We found ourselves back at the Center just in time for lunch with big appetites!  All sorts of food appeared and quickly disappeared! After lunch, this hardy bunch was ready for more so we switched to skate skis and headed out for more fun.  Coach Rosemary and Coach Emilie set up cones on Chip Hill and we practiced our slalom and seeing how far we could glide. We even did a slalom down and back up relay! After that, we played on snow-making hills and rollers and had a relay race over them all!  A fun day!

Ripley wore himself out!
