MNC Skiathlon Wax Tip

If you are prepping your skis for tomorrow’s Skiathlon, here are some tips!

Glide

The snow is semi-transformed, and temperatures will be going from cold to warm during the day. This is the kind of snow conditions where it is usually better to wax on the cold side rather than the warm side, as shaded areas could still be a bit firm and hardpacked. Most all of the course is on natural snow!

Safe bets in the most common paraffin brands are:

-Toko Base Performance Red (iron-in or spray)

-Swix CH6 or CH7 (iron-in or spray)

If you have been experimenting with some of the new liquid Vauhti or Star products:

-Vauhti LDR Liquid (One, Up, Pro, or Race) which should give good coverage on the varying snowpack

-Star NF Cold, which has seemed to test warmer than its advertised range

For all liquids, apply well in advance (night before, or early tomorrow morning) and then brush thoroughly with a nylon brush once fully dry

Kick

Without having gotten to see the trails today it is hard to make a call here. Based on recent events and conditions at Rikert and the Range, you should be able to utilize a hardwax binder such as Toko Base Green or Vauhti Super Base, ironed into the kick zone. Special klister combo waxes (like Oslo) would give great kick, but may need to be covered with hardwax. Bring you kick box and check in with the MNC wax bench to get the lay of the land!

BKL Mini-Marathon Totals

Great work last Thursday BKLers! We had some kids ski 6 kilometers and some kids ski up to 12! You can look your child’s name up below and see how far they skied. Let them know how amazed you are that they can ski so far in just over an hour (with breaks for snacks!). Special thanks to Amanda and Beth who stood out in the cold and bravely manned the snack table and helped kids record their laps!

BKLers, Masters & Juniors: It’s time to register for the MNC Skiathlon!

Our MNC Skiathlon is this Saturday, Feb. 22 at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington!  We are hoping for a good turn-out for this fundraiser which supports our scholarship fund, so give it a try! Open Men & Women, Juniors and the “What The Heck I’ll Try It! Race” is in the morning and the BKL kids races are in the afternoon.

In a Skiathlon, racers ski a classic loop, transition to skate skis then ski a skate loop. Grades 1&2 ski a classic loop only. The “What the Heck…” race is a 5 km, your choice of technique and is designed for first timers who want to give racing a fun try and support the scholarship fund.

Registration: By Thursday midnight on SKIREG. Schedule on SKIREG as well. Day of Race registration also available for an increased fee (so sign-up early & SAVE $).

Contribute to the concession stand!  Sign-up HERE

See you there!

BKL Woodstock Sweetheart Race

Kate, Pippa and Tessa leading the 5/6 girls race.

There was great snow, lots of glitter, and a good showing of MNC BKL Racers at Sunday’s Woodstock Sweetheart Race.  Bundled in buffs, the 5/6 MNC girls started fast off the line, kept up the pace, caught a few boys on the way to finish 1, 2 & 3.  Way to go girls!

Matias Citarella and Jonah Gorman raced in the boy’s 5/6 race. Jonah used a lot of V-2 on the flat sections of the course and propelled himself into a second place finish. Matias bounced back from an early fall, passed most of the field and got himself a 4th place.  Amazing skiing boys!

Mia Diller skied in the 7/8 race and her mom, Coach Emilie did the “Try It” first timers race (and won it!). Great racing to everyone!

Jonah showing some great skiing technique. That’s Matias in the back working his way up the pack.

BKL Parents- We need your help Feb. 22!

Hi BKL Parents!   Our MNC Skiathlon race is coming up on Feb. 22nd.  This race raises money for our scholarship fund and will be held at Sleepy Hollow Inn & Touring Center in Huntington. BKL has been given the task of running a small concession stand for lunch.  We really need one person to organize the concession (make a sign-up genius, be there to set it up), a few more volunteers to help run it and lots of people to donate crockpots of chili, cornbread and homemade snacks.  If you can help, please email Lisanne Hegman at lhegman@gmavt.net

Thanks so much!!
