Laps and laps at Craftsbury

Craftsbury has continued to be the go-to spot for Nordic skiers in our area…the things they are able to accomplish is phenomenal, especially when snow is concerned.

This past weekend the Junior group spent both Saturday and Sunday up at the Outdoor Center, which now boasts a 2.5k loop with pristine conditions suitable for race skis. On Saturday, some of the Comp Team joined up with St Mikes for a classic timetrial, while those who raced the HS event earlier in the week did some L3 classic intervals. T

Speaking of, that first HS race was a big showing for MNC racers who really commanded the scene with Aidan and Kai going 1-2 for men, and Ali and Rose going 1-2 for women! Sammie and Lily also skied strongly and showed that the Pugs are not to be taken lightly this season!

On Sunday conditions improved even more, and Kai, Baxter, and Dakota (the U18 gang) was able to put in a solid 2.5 hour skate ski with speeds. Making the effort to get in a longer (2+hr) continuous ski most weeks is a goal this winter, mainly to make sure we hold fitness and keep up the volume enough to be able to pull back when needed.

Baxter, Kai and Dakota skiing lap after lap!

“Pulling back” will happen a bit this week as we keep the sessions relatively short and prepare for the first Eastern Cup in Fort Kent! It’s a big start to the season, with a huge MNC squad attending despite the insane distance and travel. Good signs of a positive season to come!

BKL Training Week of 12/11

Snow Leopards, Jackrabbits  (2-3 Day) & Penguins

There is snow in the forecast! Check out the National Weather Service Forecast for Jericho. We are hoping to get on snow this week!

Tuesday: It’s supposed to snow much of the day. Travel could be unsafe. We will have coaches at the Range unless we post otherwise, so check the website before you leave to be sure nothing has changed! Regardless, it is always up to you to decide whether or not travel from your area to the Range is safe enough for you to make the trip.

We will plan to ski, SKATE technique (Penguins: classic). Bring Skate equipment, but also bring running shoes, just in case! If you have old skis or “rock” skis, you might want to bring those.

Thursday: Definite plan is to ski, SKATE technique! It will be cold, so bundle your kids. We need some parents to stay inside and help & monitor kids that coaches send in to warm up.  Please e-mail me at sheacobb19@gmail.com if you can help out!

Saturday:  Classic technique, long easy distance ski at Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. They got over a foot of snow! Should be great! Meet at 9:30 to get waxed and ready, on snow by 10:00.

Friday Foxes

Thanks to all the parents who turned out for our meeting this past Friday!

Friday Dec. 15- Those who haven’t picked up their rentals should come. We will size the kids and you can take home your rental gear.

Range has snow! Friday Foxes will ski on Friday, Dec. 15th!!

Winter Masters Training FAQ

Weekly Training Plans:

The technique (skate or classic) and training information will be published Sunday evening  in our Masters Training Doc.  However, due to often rapidly changing snow conditions please plan to review the Snow Report and Masters Training Doc around 3PM to confirm the plan for the day.
If you are unsure or if conditions are likely to change, consider bringing both skate and classic equipment.  Additionally, early in the season please be prepared for dry land training (ie sneakers & bounding poles) or alternate locations (the Notch, Sleepy,…).

Session Start Times:

We ask that all Masters have skis on and be on snow by the planned session start times (3:45 & 6:00PM).  Being on snow on time helps our Masters Coaches keep sessions organized, avoids having fellow skiers standing in the cold and maximizes ski time.

On Classic ski evenings please plan to arrive early to wax or get wax advice from the coaches if needed.  Early in the season we also encourage those new to Masters to arrive a early in order to get acquainted with the coaches and coaching groups.

Coaching Coverage:

Afternoon Session(3:45 – 5:15PM):

Afternoon sessions will be lead by Coach Christa.

Evening Session (6:00 – 7:30PM):

Tuesdays:   Will be our full coaching day where we plan to have three coaches and three ability groups.     Blue:  Experienced Skiers, White = Intermediate  Green = Novice/Beginner.   If you arrive late and miss the group gathering,  a white board will be available directing you the the general direction of your group.
Thursday: (1) Coach Liam will lead drills and activities for those wanting additional instruction, (2) others will ski freely or according to a prescribed workout plan. (Check-in with Coach Liam. He will provide tips and suggestions for self guided drills/activities).

Race Training Plans:

For those who purchased race training plans Coach Adam will be reaching out to you to build your plan.

Parking Reminder

Please plan to park in the large parking lot on the left side before the grooming equipment building. Access to the trails and Walker building can be obtained through the tunnels that go beneath the ski trails.  Please do not park on the side of the road near the smaller lot at the top of the hill.

Masters Wax Kit

Coach Rosemary did a great job summing up some ideal waxes for MNC BKL skiers, so I thought I would mimic her post a bit and share some ideas for what MNC Masters might pick up to wax with this year!

All of these items can be purchased through our Toko Order Form (click here) by December 4th so look for some great deals and offers there.

Glide wax:

For those that want to keep it simple, Toko offers a great liquid Express Glide Wax. This is the kind of wax you can rub onto your ski right before training, or even just once a week, to keep your bases fresh.

For more advanced waxing (requiring iron, scraper, brushes, etc) Toko has a reliably simple system of glide waxes in Blue, Red, and Yellow!

Kick wax:

Another simple system. I recommend one each of Green/Base, Blue, Red, and Yellow. If conditions vary regularly, these tubes should last at least 2 years each although we always tend to go through more Red and Yellow with warm spells!

A synthetic cork is ideal for smoothing the wax.

Klister:

Don’t fear the klister! Another simple system, although I suggest a slightly different approach for Masters…

For a base klister, use the Green Spray Klister which provides an even layer without a mess. It can be applied without

a torch or heat, so you just spray it on and smooth it out with a thumb or cork, wait a few minutes for it to cool (ideally outside if it’s cold) and then apply your klister of choice.

When it comes to klisters for use on top of the spray binder, go with the “real deal” and not sprays. A tube each of Blue, Red, and Yellow will serve you well, likely for more than a single season.

BKL Off to a Great Start!

MNC BKL got underway with a bit of snow underfoot on Tuesday at the Range. Kids played lots of getting-to-know-you games and did some ski specific dryland training. It’s so much fun to see all the returning kids and meet so many new ones! We have a big group this year!
