BKL Practice: 3/02-3/07

Thanks to everyone for coming out, skiing & volunteering for our Sweetheart Sprints last Friday night. Special thanks to Nancy Davis for making all those lovely hearts which we hung in the trees! They looked great! Check out the photos on the BKL Blog!

NWVT BKL Mini-Festival 3/06: There is still time to register for this and it is open to all our BKL members. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun! There are races in the morning and a self-guided mini-marathon to do in the afternoon, which parents can do with their kids.  If it were a normal year, many of us would be traveling to the New England Festival which would have been held in Waterville, ME  (the Festival is in a different northern New England state every year). Because of COVID, most of the BKL clubs in New England are having smaller mini- festivals.  Our NWVT Festival for the four clubs in our district is at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington on Saturday, March 6. This is a great opportunity to check out the scene. There is a mini-marathon only option and a non-competitive, “try it out” race in addition to the age group races. Deadline for registration is this Wednesday (3/03) at 5 PM. If you have any questions, feel free to email Coach Rosemary: sheacobb19@gmail.com. Registration link HERE.

Reminder:  Our last practice this year will be March 16. We’ll do something special and have a little awards ceremony.

Tuesday Practice 3/02:  Classic for Everyone

Weather: Cold temps return with a high of 17 today! 2-4″ of snow are forecasted to fall on Monday.

Wax: Clean the warm wax off your skis! We will hold off applying wax until practice because depending on how much snow we get, we might need a little klister or binder. Bring cold waxes and klisters if you have them.

Thursday  Practice 3/04: Skate

Get ready for some fun, It’s Bolton Scavenger Hunt Day!

Weather: A little more moderate, might get up to 20F today.

Racers & NWVT Mini-Festival Participants:

Saturday, March 6. Costumes & glitter encouraged!  We will have our MNC Tent set up in Molly’s Meadow so that kids can use it as their base. Weather looks good for the day! Coach Rosemary & some of the other coaches will be present to help kids warm up and get to the start. We will also have our wax bench, structure kit & some wax ready in case there is anything we need to do to your child’s skis to make them fast!

Wax Recommendation:  Will be posted here on Thursday night (I hope). The race is Skate.

Meeting Times: Plan to arrive about an hour before your age group start time. Pick up your bib and goody bag, and come check in with the coaches at our tent which will be up in Molly’s Meadow.

Wax Tip: Hard’Ack Challenge

It looks like spring skiing weather in St. Albans this weekend! A week of freeze-thaws, a race-time temp in the mid-30s, and a natural snow base will mean softer and dirtier snow. Here is a simple wax recommendation that should help repel dirt as long as possible and keep skis moving through the wet snow.

  1. Use a glide wax cleaner (note: this is NOT the same as a kick wax remover!) to remove as much dirt as possible: put some of the cleaner on a rag, wipe it down your ski base, let it dry for 20 minutes, and brush thoroughly with a metal brush.
  2. If you don’t have a glide wax cleaner, do a “hot-scrape” of your skis. To do this, apply a mid-to-warm wax like CH8 or Toko Red. After ironing, wait only a couple seconds before scraping to brushing to try and pull dirt particles out of the base.
  3. Actual race prep begins with a neutral NF layer of a semi-hard wax like Toko Blue or Swix CH7. Scrape and brush.
  4. Race layer is a yellow warm glide wax like Toko Yellow or CH10. Scrape and brush well after letting cool fully

Bonus: Look for the MNC wax bench (possibly tent) on site, where we will have a bench set up with a structure tool and some Toko NF Yellow spray to add to your skis if you like.

BKL Sweetheart Sprints- Pictures

About 36 racers from Lollipop to Grade 8 hit the Picnic Loop at Sunset on March 6 for the first MNC BKL Sweetheart Sprints. This race, originally scheduled closer to Valentine’s Day, was rescheduled due to extremely cold temperatures. Today was a much nicer day, in fact, it was perfect!  The temps started out at about 29 F and began to cool slightly as the race began. The sunset from Picnic Loop was lovely and if you turned 180 degrees, you could also see tonight’s full moon rising over Bolton Mountain. What a lovely evening for a race! Pictures below and more will be coming.
