Masters Workout of the Week (10/12)

This week we are re-visiting the timetrial or “test” component of training. With our Masters Southridge TT coming up this weekend, it’s a good time for anyone who has raced this event to check their time this season compared to efforts in the past. For those that have never given it a go, it could be the perfect time to set your own “time to beat” and repeat the test later in the fall (or next year) to check improvement.

The Southridge timetrial from the pre-COVID era

If you have done some tests earlier in the season, such as a double pole or running test, this week may also be a good time to check on improvements in those areas, particularly running as we may be transitioning to snow in the next 6-8 weeks…at least we can hope!

The Story of a Bridge

Here are some step-by-step photos of the first big bridge going in on our new lighted loop at Bolton. Yesterday Mike Millar and I put on our amateur carpentry hats, attached real functional bits to our ski wax roto-brush drills, and pieced together the first of what will eventually be three large-scale bridges to help the snowmobile and groomer provide early-season skiing on Picnic Loop.

To see more photos (updated frequently) of the trail work in action, check out our Flickr Album.

How things started: a narrow mountain bike/foot bridge. I began by cutting down large, straight trees about 5″ in diameter. These were all trees that needed to be removed for canopy clearing to allow snowfall to hit the trail. Each “beam” was 12′ long

Mike and I cut into the surrounding earth to “bench-in” the beams. They were buffered with large and small rocks. In this photo we are making sure the distance between the widest beams is equal across the length of the span

When all 4 beams were in position, I used the chainsaw to lightly mill a flat surface on top. It was about this point that not only was I getting a face full of sawdust, but Mike and I were actually getting hit by the first snow of the season!

Beams are milled and getting final leveling before the decking is installed. This photo does a good job of showing the rock bracing and “internal organs” of the bridge.

Decking is 2×6 pressure-treated lumber, with exterior screws. The boards are flush for now but will shrink up to 1/4 inch over time, hopefully only letting minimal snow through! The edge of each end gets buried the bridge is flush with the ground

Yes, we used a lawn rake and some sweeping to clean up the area for the “after” shot

All we need now is snow…and a few more of these bridges. Join us Saturday from 1-3 if you’d like to keep making this trail awesome!

Junior Fall Photos

Some selected photos that show what the Juniors have been up to this fall! A few main components:

-Wednesdays are the big day for specific strength. We’ve gotten back on the “towing” bandwagon, where we use old bicycle tubes to pull one another up hills while double poling. Resistance builds strength and good body position!

-We have continued to mountain bike a lot, with adventures in our awesome home trails at Cochrans and out to hotspots like Stowe and Waitsfield

-Some more and more short hard speeds have been introduced…both upping out 30/30 durations as well as working on even shorter, agiltiy/coordination speeds and hopskating

-Most of our group is running XC this fall. It’s a shortened season but there are already a few races in the books and the MNC athletes are racing fast and showing their stuff

We haven’t had much rain this year, but we will still train when we do

Masters Weekend Rolls

We have begun the transition from weekend gravel rides to weekend rollerskis with our Masters (however, you can still connect with groups and rides too). This is the third weekend of group rolls, and we have lucked-out with weather each time it seems.

By map-hopping across the county and beyond we’re aiming to check out the best skiing from the shores of Lake Champlain to the heights of App Gap. This morning we embarked on a big ski on a loop in Ferrisburgh. The longest ski of the day goes to Lukas and Mike Millar who put in a 50k of skating!

You can find photos being uploaded to the Masters Fall ’20 Flickr album

Trail Work: Thanks!

What a great turnout to help work on the lighted Bolton loop! We never got a full group photo but estimates put our totals at about 25 people. It was like an army of bladed garden tools out there, with grass being slashed and limbs being chopped. And in the end, what a crazy amount of work! Aside from the bridges left to build, you can pretty much drive Porsche down that loop without incident.

Human vs. Rock

Our next steps will be to build 4 large bridges and one shorter bridge, plus clearing and buffering some washed-out areas. A bit more cutting, measuring, digging, and nailing to make the water crossings ready for the snowmobile and groomer! We will have more info coming up on the next trail day.
