BKL Practice Week of 2/13/23

Tuesday, 2/13: Penguins Classic & All others Skate

Penguins: Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt!

Jack Rabbits, Arctic Foxes & Racers: Valentine’s Day Mini-Marathon

It’s time for our annual mini-marathon!  How many laps (or Km’s) can you ski in one hour?  We will do a little warm-up and start all together at 4 pm.  Kids will ski as much as they can on the designated loops, stopping to fuel up at the snack table and record their laps.

Parents:  1) Every kid should bring a filled water bottle labeled with their name. Kids will get thirsty. They can leave water by the snack table. (Remember that Range water is non-potable).

2) We need parents to bring some healthy snacks for the snack table. Valentine’s treats are OK too.

3) We need 2-3 parents to help with the snack table and to help the kids mark down their laps. If you can help, email Coach Rosemary: sheacobb19@gmail.com

Thursday, 2/16: Skate At Tomasi’s & Funky Hat Day. Practice will be 4-5:15pm. Check before you go for last minute changes.

Update Wed. 2/15, 2PM:  The Range is closed for the rest of this week, but the skating should be OK at Tomasi’s Field and way better than the last time we skied there on frozen grass!

Parking: We will plan to park & drop off at the Casey’s Hill parking lot on Mountain Road and meet kids there.

Weekend Racers: Off

It’s Middle School Championships, Coach Rosemary will be at the Dublin Eastern Cup and some kids are recovering from illnesses. Get some needed rest or ski with the family this weekend.

BKL Practice Week of 2/06/23 & MNC Skiathlon

After all that brutal cold weather, this week will give us much warmer temperatures, possibly even rain (but hopefully not).  We’ll be practicing ski changes this week in preparation for the MNC Skiathlon.

MNC SKIATHLON– Saturday, 2/11. This race is a fundraiser for our scholarship fund. Skiers do a lap of classic, change skis and finish with a lap of skating. Grades 1 & 2 do a Classic lap only. It’s a lot of fun! There is a race for everyone with Adult races in the morning and BKL Races in the afternoon. Everyone is welcomed to race! Check it out:

MNC Skiathlon

Cookies for the Skiathlon:

We need cookies for the BKL Skiathlon Race!  If you are planning to come, please bring cookies so we can have refreshments for the kids at our awards party after the race! Drop them off at the Round Barn (Registration). Thanks so much!

We still need a few more volunteers, too:   Skiathlon Volunteering

Tuesday, 2/07: Penguins, Jack Rabbits, Arctic Foxes: Classic

Racers, Liz’s Jack Rabbit Group and Any child doing the Skiathlon: Bring both Skate & Classic Equipment for Skiathlon Practice

We will practice ski changes for the MNC Skiathlon race coming up on Saturday.

*If there are any Arctic Foxes or 3/4 Jack Rabbits (1/2 Racers do a classic loop only) who are interested in racing the Skiathlon, they should bring both Skate & Classic skis and they can join Racers and Liz’s Group for Skiathlon practice. Let your coach know and they will help connect you.

Thursday: Everyone Skate.

  • Good idea to check the website before you go for cancellation- 100% chance of rain forecasted.

Coming Up Next Week: Valentine’s Day BKL Mini-Marathon!

We will need parents to bring some healthy snacks, and maybe some of them could be Valentine’s Day themed! We will also need a couple of parents to help setup & monitor the snack table & to help count laps. Please email Rosemary if you can help: sheacobb19@gmail.com

BKL Makes Lemonade from Lemons: Climbing, Dryland & the Bogburn

Liam Vile at the turn-around at Rikert

Liam V skis through the lap lane at the Rikert Bogburn.

BKL kids have been handed a lot of lemons lately- no snow to ski on, warm temps, cancelled races, Range closed. They have been doing a great job of making the best of things and turning it all into Lemonade!

Last Tuesday, BKL kids did a day at MetroRocks Climbing gym. Lots of fun was had by all- Penguins through Racers. We did the self-belays, the bouldering walls and some kids found the Foozball too. Everyone went home with smiling faces and tired arms! (Photos below).

Thursday had us back at Mill River Park for some dryland adventures. These gung-ho kids had fun doing a  muddy run, some speedball and soccer and lots of agility in waning light and dark.

As the week went on, ski conditions just seemed to get worse. I promised the Racers that we would definitely ski on Saturday, so when Saturday’s BKL race at Sleepy Hollow was cancelled, we quickly changed plans and everyone signed up for the Bogburn which had been moved from its traditional location in Pomfret to Rikert Touring Center in Ripton.  We had a very strong showing with 13 kids from MNC racing.  Were conditions great? No! Kind of like a ribbon of icy snow with a very well set track. The people at Rikert did a great job preparing a ski course that held up to the 200 or so racers. Even the tricky downhill that seemed icy at first softened up as it was skied in and wasn’t bad at all. MNC skiers did very well- most of them finishing in the top ten of their age groups! We have a very strong team! Congratulations to Daisy Tremble who skied the Lollipop, Oliver Tremble, Finn and Ollie Laber and Izabella Altodonna who all skied the Gr. 1-4 race, Ansel Sprague, Oakley Crawford and Liam Vile who skied the 5/6 race, and to James Langan, Isobel Calfee, Kate Carlson, Brooke Greenberg and Astrid Longtreth who all skied the 7/8 race.   We also had one U16 ski (Niko Cuneo) and 7 Masters skiers. A few photos below.
