Climb to the Castle: Reg closes tonight

Registration for the Climb to the Castle rollerski race closes tonight at 5pm! MNC will have a presence at this race, with Juniors and Masters alike competing.

Please note that athletes must have their own transportation down from the finish…we are fortunate to have the MNC van and a celebrity volunteer driver (US Biathlon CEO Max Cobb) and although we may run out of actual seats, we can offer some space for a ride down post-race to MNC members.

Please note that masks and COVID vaccination are pre-requisites for van travel. We have a box of disposable masks on-hand in the van.

MNC Juniors will plan to attend the post-race awards and BBQ at the Mt Van Hovenburg rollerski track after the race.

MNC Sweatshirts!

The cool fall air is here, and the MNC sweatshirts have arrived just in time! This order is designed as a fundraiser, so not only are you getting a sweet piece of MNC gear, you’re directly supporting the club! Our last club-wide sweatshirt order was back in 2016 and it’s time to bring it back. Perfect for fall sports (competing OR spectating), school days, holiday gifts, or as a piece of iconic fall fashion, the hooded sweatshirt is hard to beat.

Comes with the MNC shield logo on the front, and the “Mansfield Nordic Club” wording across the back. Consider sizing up: these do shrink and they can run a bit small. For reference, these are the exact same model as the “Life of Pablo” edition sweatshirts from Mountain Camp 2018. Coach Adam wears a size large, perfect after a few cycles through the dryer.

Junior Summer Week 1

Our summer training has begun, with numbers quickly closing-in on the most we have ever seen! With our college training group, Junior athletes, and U14 rollerskiers, we are going to be reaching over 50 skiers and taking things to new record levels. This past week kicked-off our “traditional” summer program, with some Summer Olympic challenges. The group broke into teams and competed in everything from medicine ball shot-put to mountain biking to an gymnastics course.

It was a fun set of activities with times and scores that didn’t really count for anything…but just getting a big group together was a gold medal endeavor after making it through summer training last year! It is so great to be headed toward normalcy with programming and safe surroundings.

Everyone got a short rollerski in, and our new-to-rollerskiing group was already cruising about 10km only a couple days later. Thanks to our great familiar coaches like Perry, Sara, and Rick along with new summer coaches Kirsten and Craig from BHS! This summer is going to be a ton of fun.

What’s the latest on the Range?

Recently, the government has opened CEATS (Camp Ethan Allen Training Site, also known as “The Range” to most of us) to civilian use once again. Access requires lots of documentation and permitting…COVID plans, insurance clarification, organizational certification documents, schedules for each and every day of intended use, and more.

MNC has submitted all the necessary paperwork, including scheduling outlines. We are waiting for the National Guard and land management officials to certify and approve our “Short-Term Lease” as it is called. This lease grants use for no more than 30 non-consecutive days in a calendar year along with a fee of $3/day per athlete.  We have requested access and use of the rollerski/ski loops and Walker Building beginning in July, with the intent to finish our 30 day span in mid-December.

Our intent is to rollerski 2x per week (Tues/Thurs) in July and August. In the fall, we transition to 1x per week as many of our Junior athletes are only training with the club once per week as they compete in fall sports. We want to ensure a safe, car-free, well-lit rollerski option in the fall and we feel this is arguably the most important and relevant use of the facility.

In the early winter, we will continue to mix 2x per week with some “blackout” weeks such as Thanksgiving. Through careful planning, this will allow us to stretch the 30 day usage through this calendar year. We are unsure currently if the Range will be our home training facility in the midwinter months, but we are pursing options to engage National Guard officials in a dialogue to reassess this new policy.

For now, we’re crossing our fingers for a summer and fall that look more like years past!
