BKL Practices, Week of 3/05/18

2 & 3 Day Programs:

It’s Skiathlon Week for BKL! The MNC Skiathlon is on Sunday, March 11 and we are all going to practice for it this week.  A Skiathlon is a race where you ski one loop classic, change skis, then ski one loop skate. Distances are adjusted for the different BKL age groups. Bring both sets of skis on Tuesday & Thursday. A few more things:

  1. Register for the Skiathlon & get info here: SKIREG Proceeds from this race benefit the MNC Scholarship Fund.
  2. Please check the website before you leave on Tuesday, in case we need to cancel due to not enough snow at the Range to ski on. Snow is forecasted for Wednesday- Skiing should be better for us on Thursday.

TUESDAY: CLASSIC & SKATE.  We will all practice transitions for the duathlon, so bring both skate and classic gear. We won’t wax for classic today, we will primarily skate and just double pole on our classic skis to practice our transitions.

THURSDAY: CLASSIC & SKATE. More duathlon practice (we all need practice getting our equipment on and off anyways!). We will try to classic on hardwax today and anyone racing on Sunday can stop a little early so that you can clean your skis.

3 Day Skiers & Everyone

SUNDAY: MNC DUATHLON!  BKL Registration opens 12-1:00 (white tent), Race starts at 1:00 PM with the Lollipop race.  Coaches will be on site to help wax and preview the course (look for the MNC tent). Please bring cookies or snacks to share at the end of the race!

Friday Foxes:

Skiing at the Range on Friday.

Everyone invited to the MNC Skiathlon on Sunday. Skiing is great at Craftsbury! Lollipop race (Kindergarten and under)  is free, Grades 1&2 race is classic only.

BKL Craftsbury Day!

Last Wednesday a bunch of BKL kids joined Coaches Rosemary, Tom and Emilie up at the Craftsbury Nordic Center for some fun skiing. We played on a jump, learned to do the human slalom and then went for a nice long ski on Craftsbury’s awesome trails.  After lunch, the kids hit the trails again, this time, practicing their backwards skiing (click on video link below).  Happy Birthday to Tessa Diller (on the far right in yellow)!

Coach Julie, Astrid, Hector and alpine brother Ebe missed the group picture, but not the trail ski!

Bogburn!

Another year and another memorable Bogburn ski race. This year the event was moved to the Woodstock Nordic center which ended up really changing the character of the course quite a bit. Last year’s conditions and the nature of the traditional course made double poling at any point nearly impossible. This year, it seemed like skate skis and double-pole-only racing was the method of choice for many. Those that went on klister probably still felt it in their upper bodies because there was no escaping the long stretches of open field on this course.

One thing that stayed consistent about the race, regardless of location, was the fun atmosphere and real old-school vibes even amidst the posh country club setting. The fact that most of us got to race in a T-shirt was an extra bonus!

Things got going with the BKL contingent and while it was a bit of a bummer to not see more of our BKL crew in attendance for this one (I think fatigue, both athlete- and parent-based, is lingering from the early BKL Festival this season) Virginia and Julia tore it up and even got to ski together into the finish. In a running series of close finishes rarely more than a second apart, Virginia got the better of her rival Sarah Glueck on this day! Then it was time for the open races, where MNC coaches and athletes alike raced through the slush.

Many MNC folks raced in the open races, from athletes like Dakota and Baxter, to all the coaches, to stalwart Masters competitors like Karen who has scored tons of Club Cup points for MNC this year with her super attendance at races far and wide!

Dakota went with the vintage suit which was the right call, but unfortunately lost a pole basket right after the race started and decided to soldier-on without it for the rest of the way. I told him people would’ve given him a new pole but he said he wanted to be polite since it wasn’t an intense Eastern Cup race! (photo by Camille)

Before us older races got going, I entrusted Julia and Virginia with the GoPro for the remainder of the day, and thanks to their hard work interviewing and capturing race footage I was able to put together the first-ever “BKL Mini-Vlog”. So, without further ado, enjoy some footage of the 2018 Bogburn as seen through the eyes of these two:

Stay tuned for a full-length vlog of this past week, including the Bogburn and the adventures around Woodstock that Dakota, Sara, Magda and I had after the race ended. A few more photos from Camille below…check out the NWVE recap for links to the full album.

This was a fun day where every coach actually raced as well! Adam, Sara, Rick, Rosemary and Tom all competed! (photo by Camille)

Not sure what type of post-race cooldown method Magda is going for here, but good knee-drive and hip activation! (photo by Camille)

Results can be found on NENSA!

BKL Goes to MetroRocks!

With the rain and warm temps forecasted for Tuesday, BKL decided to scrap practice at the Range and went climbing at Metrorocks instead. We had a great turn-out and a great time! Turns out that a lot of our kids really enjoy the challenge of climbing! The Tic Tac Toe wall as a favorite as were the self-belays and the slack line.

Sylvie on the slackfline.

Greta, Virginia and Asher on the Tic Tac Toe wall.

Taylor and Carl on the self-belays.

Carly and Bella practice balance on the slack line.

Brock hanging off the wall! Brock and his brother Weston come her all the time and are quite accomplished climbers.
