Masters Training Start-Up

Given the latest guidance from the State of Vermont we are planning to start MNC Masters programming Jan. 5th with multiple changes in order to keep our members safe and also comply with State and local venue requirements.

Please read below to get an overview of Masters training this season.

Training Groups

There will be six evening Sleepy Hollow (S1 thru S6) groups and two afternoon Bolton (B1 & B2) groups based on skier input collected at registration.  Each group will be targeted to have fewer than 10 Masters and will be provided with recommended works outs as well as designated meet up times and locations for each session.

Training Sessions

Each training session will consist a 15 min warm up, 15 min group instruction period followed by a 45 min – 1hr individual workout.  MNC coaches will be available for 1:1 guidance and questions during the individual workout time.

Training Plans

Training plans will have a common theme and focus across groups, but will provide four training level options. These options allow MNC coaches and athletes to adjust workouts based on an individual athlete’s focus, fitness level and experience.

Black / Blue workouts are designed for our more performance oriented and/or experienced athletes. Black being the most challenging option in terms of intensity and duration.

White / Green workouts are designed for athletes looking to focus more on building ski specific fitness, skills and experience. The White plan will be the more challenging of these two options.

Meet Up Times and Locations

Due to COVID restrictions, it is important that athletes and coaches plan to abide by the outlined schedules and locations.  All skiers should plan to be ready and on snow by session start times of 4:00PM and 6:00PM.   After a 15 minute warm-up Odd numbered training groups (e.g. S1, S3, S5 & B1) should assemble at their designated start locations to meet with their coaches while Even numbered groups continue to ski and warm-up.

At 4:30 PM and 6:30PM, the Odd groups will begin their individual workouts while the Even groups will meet with their coaches at their designated start locations.

COVID Protocols

Pre-Session: Prior to attending each session Masters will be required to fill out the Health Screening forms.  In addition, Sleepy Hollow will requires contact tracing information which can be done on line or in person.

Training Sessions:

  • Please try to follow an “arrive, participate, and leave” mentality; do not gather at trailheads, access areas or other outdoor facilities before or after recreation and fitness activities.
  • Anyone participating in outdoor recreation and fitness activities must wear a cloth face covering. We understand that skiing at a harder pace requires heavy breathing and it may be more difficult to maintain a face covering: please be respectful of fellow skiers, and if you must pull your mask down to breathe please move as far away as reasonably possible from others.
  • All participants are expected to consistently maintain at least six feet of physical distance from anyone outside their immediate household.
  • Masters program protocols have been informed by the VT State Work Safe Section 4.1 (Outdoor Activities) and Section 8.1 (Close Contact Businesses).

What is next?

Prior to January 5th, each registered Master will receive an email designating their training group along with finalized Meeting Times and Locations.  We will also begin publishing a weekly Masters Blast with important information and links to detailed training plans.

BKL Program Start-up: 1/07/2020

Good News! With the recent changes in VT COVID restrictions, we are able to start up our BKL programs at Bolton, as long as we have enough snow there to spread ourselves out.

Jack Rabbits, Arctic Foxes & Racers will start on 1/07/20, 4- 5:30, Bolton Valley Nordic

Penguins will start the following Tuesday, 1/12/2020, 4- 5:30, Bolton Valley Nordic

Parent ZOOM meeting on 1/05/2020 at 7:30 for all groups.  Info and Zoom link HERE.

Update 1/04/2020: FIND YOUR CHILD’s SUBGROUP

Meeting Places:

Penguins:  By the Sports Center Main Entrance

Jack Rabbits 1 & 2: By the Swing Set

Arctic Foxes 1, 2 & 3: By the Row of Fruit Trees in front of the Sports Center

Racers 1, 2, & 3: By the Woods between Parking lot and entrance to Picnic Loop.

We will be operating a little differently this year, so please attend the meeting to get all the details.

The Basics:

  1. You will need to fill out a health screening form for each child before you come to each practice. Bookmark this link:  MNC Health Screen Form.
  2. Ski from your car. Kids should change and put boots on in your car and use it as a base.
  3. There will be a meeting place set-up for each small group to meet their coach.
  4. We will wear masks in the parking lot and while skiing. The only time we will take them off is when we are going really hard and we are 6 ft. or more apart.
  5. Don’t congregate in the parking lot when picking up or dropping off kids and remember that there is no place to wait inside (i.e. be on-time for pick-up).

MNC Juniors Re-Start

Hello skiers and parents,

Happy Holidays and great news heading into 2021! We are able to re-start our programming under new VT Guidance issued as part of section 9.1. If you have not done so yet, I encourage you to read that guidance so we all understand the steps and factors at play as we move toward in-person training with groups.
What this means in a nutshell is that we can resume training in groups of up to 25, provided we follow guidance of masks and distancing, along with pretty stringent training structures: we still can’t be hanging out in the parking lot, gathering trailside to chat and congregate, and forgetting our masks at home.
There is also a requirement that each of us fill out a health-screening form the days we attend practice. Think of this as “making your reservation” to come to training that day. This form is linked below: my suggestion is to bookmark it!
Now the part we’ve been waiting for: What will training look like? When do we start? I’ll keep this in more direct bullet-point form, with links and notes.
WHEN (GENERAL)
Training will resume officially on January 1st, 2020. The club is taking this next week to roll-out additional information because our club is not just a Junior group: there are a lot of moving parts and we want to be absolutely sure we have all the boxes checked with coaches, forms, locations, etc.
WHEN (SPECIFIC)
We will use a quick form to try and get a handle on schedules and class times for all Juniors.
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4-6pm are typically the “MNC Days” for athletes also doing high school skiing, and Bolton (see below) has confirmed that this timeframe can be set aside for the club when the area is open.
While groups of up to 25 are allowed, we will aim to have smaller groups when possible for a better coach:athlete ratio as well as safety. Much like summer training, I will go through the schedules and signups and put together an initial outline which each skier/family can review. With many of our athletes doing the 1-day/wk program, this may be as simple as dividing this group up between a Tuesday and Thursday group.
Even if you may only be skiing with MNC one day per week, please indicate any available times you have for morning or afternoon sessions in case we need to change plans, locations, or schedules in this wild world of current events!
WHERE
This is always tricky because we have a lot of Juniors coming from a lot of different towns. Bolton was always the intended “home” this winter, even before COVID derailed things. Thanks to the Range shutting out all civilians, we were already making these preparations early-on.
You can sign up for your Bolton season pass here. The updates? We have our new (to us) snowmobile and groomer up on-site and have already used it a few times before this rain. You can check conditions updates on the Twitter page here, and this page is also a feed right on the MNC homepage.
Bolton is still not officially “open”, and they say they will not open until they get a lot more snow. They did give MNC permission to train on the trails whenever we want (for free!) until they open, which is excellent. This means we can have night skiing any time we want! These are all great resources and flexibilities to have in this crazy year.
Sleepy Hollow is functioning with a time-slot reservation system for teams, so please stay tuned to the Junior Doc as we try to coordinate snowmaking access as needed.
SIGNUPS
The club paused signups after the initial shutdown back in November. That registration page is now back open and I am talking with the MNC finance crew on the best step toward pro-rating the missed time this winter.
I will send another email when any adjustments have been made to pricing and how to use possible credit going forward for those that already signed up at the original pricing! Even if you don’t sign up for the program officially yet, please go ahead and fill out the scheduling form so the process of setting up weekly training can begin! Thanks-
-Adam
One final note on group training in general. Skiing as a group is a risk much greater than skiing alone or with a partner. Although WE may all be psyched to get together, the trails we ski on are all public places that others use as well. If I were an older skier and/or a skier with an underlying health condition, I would be quite frustrated (not to mention quite afraid) of my enjoyable outdoor experience becoming a health risk from a large group of young skiers whizzing by and skiing close.

Part of the difficulty of this virus is that it can’t be seen, and in Vermont we’ve had low cases compared to the rest of the country. This makes it easy to let caution slip, but keeping everyone healthy is built on both TRUST and RESPECT even if you yourself may not be in as much danger from COVID. Let’s always remember that when we’re out sharing the trails.

MNC Pugcast #3

Craig Pepin joins the gang again for a discussion of the Dresden World Cup weekend! Some talk about race tactics and relay leg selection, a few hot-takes on National Team criteria and FIS races, and exciting tangents like Peltonen skis. Below the video you will find links to some of the topics mentioned for additional browsing!

Additional topics referenced:

  • Nordic Cross in FIS and USSA Adam can’t find it online, but the physical copy of the US Ski and Snowboard Competition Guide DOES contain a section with rules and standards for XCX (Cross Country Cross) events.
  • Peltonen Skis as Mike referenced there doesn’t seem to be a current Peltonen importer to the US, but you can check out the main website here.

New VT Guidelines 12/22

Good news for our Junior and BKL athletes! New guidance has been issued pertaining to youth sports and training groups. You can read the guidelines at the bottom of this post.

The net? It looks as if we will be able to resume in-person programming, with lots of safety restrictions, as early as Dec 26th.

MNC is planning to roll-out updated guidance, structures, and programming that meets the specified criteria of these guidelines. Our tentative program re-start date for Juniors and BKL is January 1st, 2021.

The new guidelines:

—–

9.1 Sports/Organized Sports Including Youth Leagues, Adult Leagues, Practices, Games, and Tournaments

Effective Saturday, December 26, 2020, organized youth leagues and school-based sports programs (serving individuals age 19 years and younger) may resume team-based activities strictly limited to:

  • Individual skill-building exercises;
  • Strength and conditioning sessions; and,
  • No-contact drills.

Additional direction on school-sponsored winter sports programs, applicable to both public and independent schools, will be published by the Agency of Education.

In resuming limited team-based activities, organized youth leagues shall:

  • Require all participants to complete a health check, including temperature screening, before arriving at team-based activity.
  • Eliminate all physical contact and ensure physical distance of at least six feet is always maintained between individuals.
  • Require masks / cloth face coverings to be worn at all times.
    • Anyone with a documented medical or behavioral reason for not wearing a facial covering should not be required to wear one.
  • Limit participation to 25 individuals (or create cohorts of 25 that do not mix with other cohorts) for outdoor sports.
  • Limit participation to 25% of approved fire safety occupancy or one person per 200 square feet, not to exceed 25 individuals for indoor sports.
    • Venues with multiple facilities (such as multi-rink locations, multi-court gyms) may have more than one unit of the maximum event size as long as those units are in distinct portions of the facility (a different gym, unique and distinct rinks) and the distinct gatherings have no interaction with one another.
  • Prioritize outdoor activities whenever possible.
  • Prohibit spectators; only “key personnel” – players, coaches and staff – are allowed to attend team-based activities.
    • Guardians must wait in their vehicles and to avoid socializing with other guardians at practices.
  • Prohibit congregating before, during, and after practice; promote an “arrive, play, and leave” mentality. Players and coaches should arrive for practices dressed to play to the maximum extent practicable and limit time spent in locker rooms.  Any locker room use must adhere to physical distancing and masking requirements.
  • Plan facility schedules in a manner that avoids contact between different user groups, including staggered starts and sufficient time between games to minimize contact between arriving and departing cohorts.
  • Prohibit team-based social gatherings until all other COVID-19-specific restrictions regulating sports leagues are fully lifted.
  • Discourage multi-household carpools to team-based activities.
  • Prohibit spitting or expulsion of bodily fluids of any sort on the playing service (field, court, ice, etc.), or anywhere in or around the playing service or in the facility.
  • Prohibit sharing of water bottles.
  • Regularly and thoroughly clean and disinfect equipment.

Intra- or inter-squad scrimmages are currently prohibited, as is participation by any Vermont-based team in games, meets or competitions, both within and outside of Vermont. A limited exception is provided for outdoor competition for Vermont-based athletes in downhill skiing, snowboarding, and Nordic skiing at Vermont venues. Under this limited exception, the number of participants must not exceed 25 individuals, although a competition may involve multiple groupings of 25 throughout the day if the groups do not interact with one another.

In accordance with Addendum 8, all indoor and outdoor organized adult sports* remain suspended until further notice, including Vermont-based teams participating in interstate play.

*Professionally facilitated lessons and classes that provide individualized instruction to adults are not considered “organized sports” and may occur in accordance with Section 8.1 of the Work Safe Memo.
