Fall Camp 2021

With a hard-working group this fall, we’ve been looking for ways to increase Junior programming and opportunities!

There is a volume week coming up in mid-October, and for athletes looking to work hard and put in extra time and effort toward big training it’s time to announce our Fall Camp 2021.

This is a 3-day trip (Fri/Sat/Sun) to the White Mountains of NH for rollerskiing, trail running, and more. This camp helps bridge the gap between the start of fall training and Thanksgiving Camp, when we mark the transition to winter.

Size:

This camp has space for a maximum of 7 athletes. We have a strict contract from the condo we are staying at that no more than 8 people may be staying over (so 7 athletes/1 coach is our max).

Travel/Lodging:

We would leave at the earliest possible time on Friday afternoon. Whenever the last person attending camp gets out of school, we can coordinate a departure. We can take the van and have plenty of room for gear and supplies. It’s about 2.5 hours to Attitash, the ski area we are staying at (part of a condo development, the same one we stayed at for Mountain Camp 2018).

Workouts:
Friday afternoon: Arrival, easy trail jog
Study hall after dinner
Saturday morning: Classic ski/double pole up Kancamagus, a quintessential workout for MNC!
Study hall after lunch
Saturday afternoon: Ski bounding intervals at Attitash
Study hall after dinner
Sunday morning: Trail run/hike Mt Washington and down in a loop
Return home

Free Fall Rollerski Racing!

We had a great rollerski race on our “home” track last Sunday…the Free Fall! NENSA put together a big rollerski race, and our club was highly involved in putting together the logistics and running the event. We were very excited to get back to helping put on races after a big hiatus (in particularly a hiatus at this venue).

It was a really spectacular event with perfect sunny weather and over 100 racers.

Also worth noting? Zero crashes out of 102 finishers…and that’s on a race loop that included the S-Turn downhill for all age groups. It truly is impressive how strong of a racing region New England is right now. We have an awesome collection of skiers who have all grown up challenging their skills in addition to their fitness, and can put both together to create the best racing scene in the nation (and internationally!).

The day was capped in a great way as the Junior races were the final events. Rosie won the women’s race, while Anders, Brady, and Taylor swept the podium for the men. Nothing like a great confirmation of hard work, especially for Rosie and Anders who made the decision not to run XC this fall and focus on ski training. With rollerski races and a number of engaging events and opportunities, stepping away from high school sports in the fall no longer means giving up races or experiences.

XC running has continued to go really well for many of our athletes, and we even have some seriously competitive soccer players in our midst! It really is important to recognize that there are many different paths to success at this age and racing level. The key is doing what makes you happy, and engages you to work hard and stay busy each week.

Thanks again to all of our great volunteers who helped make the event a success. Special shoutout goes to Matt Thomson who arrived extra early to help set up the course, brought a bike trailer to transport V-boards around the loop, and stayed to pick up after nearly everyone else had left. World Cup venues take note: call this man for your next FIS race!

Free Fall Rollerski Volunteer Update

Thanks to everyone who jumped-in for a robust volunteer response! This race should be very fun.

PLEASE NOTE that to watch the race, you MUST BE A VOLUNTEER. Spectators are not permitted on the base, and all volunteers will be added to a list prior to the race. If you aren’t on the list, you won’t be able to enter the range!

I have added several spots for “course monitor” positions…essentially spectators that need to be at a designated spot on course, with contact ability (a cell phone or radio) to reach the chief of course in case there is an incident. Please sign up here if interested!

Free Fall Volunteer Signup

We’d like to have all volunteers confirmed and locked-in by Friday evening since we will need to submit the list of participants/volunteers before the weekend.

Thanks!

Free Fall Rollerski Race: Seeking volunteers!

MNC members and community:

NENSA is hosting a big rollerski race at The Range on Sunday, September 19th. While NENSA is the “host” of this event, we are helping out and would love to have as many volunteers as possible taking part. The more MNC faces, apparel, racers, and volunteers on-site the better the PR and broader the scope of this great event.

This race is already set to include skiers from the US Ski Team, SMS T2, Sun Valley Gold Team, BSF Pro Team, and more as some of the nation’s top skiers will be in Vermont for a training camp the week of this race. This is an amazing opportunity to see some of the best in the country (including some upcoming 2022 Olympic skiers) live in action.

Oh, don’t forget that you can also register to race, and we hope that MNC athletes without other sport conflicts will do so!

Since this event is on a Sunday, it frees up many of our Junior running athletes who may have the day off after an XC meet. This is the perfect thing to do on an off day from training or racing cross country.

You can find a volunteer form/spreadsheet linked below, where you can input your name and information. This race will not have spectators, so volunteering is your ticket to see the action. We hope you can make it!

MNC Sweatshirts!

The cool fall air is here, and the MNC sweatshirts have arrived just in time! This order is designed as a fundraiser, so not only are you getting a sweet piece of MNC gear, you’re directly supporting the club! Our last club-wide sweatshirt order was back in 2016 and it’s time to bring it back. Perfect for fall sports (competing OR spectating), school days, holiday gifts, or as a piece of iconic fall fashion, the hooded sweatshirt is hard to beat.

Comes with the MNC shield logo on the front, and the “Mansfield Nordic Club” wording across the back. Consider sizing up: these do shrink and they can run a bit small. For reference, these are the exact same model as the “Life of Pablo” edition sweatshirts from Mountain Camp 2018. Coach Adam wears a size large, perfect after a few cycles through the dryer.
