The race season kicked off last Saturday with many of our MNC Juniors participating in the opening Eastern Cup sprint race at Craftsbury. Highlights included a lot of 1st-timers getting their first taste of high-level racing. Henry Harmeyer finished 2nd in the U20 men’s heats and Forrest Hamilton won the U16 men’s heats in a photo finish ahead of a french-Canadian athlete.
The High School race season is also under way and MNC athletes are kicking butt all over the place! I’ve heard about lots of top-10 performances across the board and one standout was Ben Carnahan (freshman at CVU) winning his first-ever JV race by nearly a minute thereby earning a spot on the Varisty squad for future races!
Training continues this week with an expanded group of athletes as we have a few of our graduates back in town (Emma Hamilton – Bowdoin; Liam John and Sam Longbenbach from St. Olaf). We are trying to log some km’s while everyone is on break from school. We are also sending luck to the Harmeyer Brothers who are traveling to Utah for Senior National Championships next week. Nathanael Kuzio also wraps up his Biathlon Junior World Championship trials races today up in Presque Isle, ME.
In an effort to emulate the success of the vaunted Tour de France of cycling, the Nordic World Cup features an annual event called the Tour de Ski, comprised of ~8 races over the course of ~2 weeks around New Year’s. The Tour de Ski includes many different events such as sprints, point-to-point distance races, mass-start and a short prologue. Similar to the Tour de France, the overall winner is crowned based on aggregate time over all 8 events.

Sunday 12/29 = Skate ski at Trapp’s, 10:00-noon.
Training 12/30 – 1/5:
Monday 12/30 = bonus training. Classic ski at Sleepy Hollow, 9:00-10:30am.
Tuesday 12/31 = no organized training.
Wednesday 1/1 = Steady-state classic ski at Sleepy, 4:00-6:00pm.
Thursday 1/2 = Skate ski at the Range, 4:00-6:00pm.
Sunday 1/5 = Skate ski at the Range, 10:00-noon.
Tentative plan for 1/6 – 1/12:
Tuesday 1/7 = classic at the Range, 4:00-6:00pm.
Thursday 1/9 = skate at the Range, 4:00-6:0opm.
Sunday 1/12 = Classic at the Range or Trapp’s, 10:00-noon.
