Warm weather adventures

This recent chilly bout of weather has officially changed the pre-training clothes packing! This morning called for long sleeves and a buff, and it won’t be long before gloves and hats are a regular staple of our days on the roads and trails.

Junior training this week included some downhill practice, a tough sprint pacing workout, and continued work on our striding…this time at Stowe. We’ve now visited 3 different alpine areas to work specifically on uphill striding: Smuggs, Whiteface, and now Stowe. The work seems to be paying off, and the winter can’t come soon enough. Here are some photos and videos!

We also did some mass start practice, which has been really beneficial...unless, in Brandon's case, you snap your ski in half!

On Thursday, we switched to skate skis for a tough session involving a sprint qualifier and more intervals after based on everyone’s initial time. To make things extra brutal, the course was a net uphill ending in the steep pitch right at the beginning of Airplane loop. If you want to work on uphill climbing, that’s the way to get it done. We had quite a few teammates off on other activities this day, so we were able to cater the intervals to each individual pretty well. Here is a video clips (thanks Liam!)

Our field trip to Stowe yesterday, we first took to the Toll Road for some skiwalking and bounding intervals. Right after that, everyone switched right into classic gear and took some steep striding trips up nearby Notchbrook road. Switchbacks, epic grades, and wide views of the mountain made it pretty sweet! Luckily there are plenty of photos and videos to share:

Masters Training this week!

For the most up-to-date Masters Training plans, please stay tuned to the MNC Masters Doc!

This Thursday marks the start of dryland sessions at the Range with coaches Rick, Adam and Liam…bring some running shoes and, if you have a set, some short bounding poles for some uphill repeats and technique on foot.

The weekend rollerski on Sunday will take place on the RT 127 bike path, hosted by Steve Crafts.

Strength training at Dee PT will begin next Tuesday, September 27th with coach Dennis!

Climb to the Castle 2016

10 MNC skiers, 1 large mountain, and a mass start race to the top! The Pug Squad drove over to Lake Placid on Saturday a got in a nice easy ski, a study hall session, and a home-cooked meal. We stayed at the High Peaks Cyclery “Base Camp” complete with bunk beds and rustic styling.

On Sunday morning everyone fought hard to the summit through wind, fog, and deep competition!

Pugs n’ Knights

The Junior Fall training group has really grown this year, especially in light of a new collaboration between MNC and the St. Mikes ski team! Many Purple Knights have joined in with the Pugs to ski at the Range on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the bigger group has really made for an awesome atmosphere.

Last Tuesday we had 19 rollerskiers, which was certainly a record number of MNC athletes rolling on a weekday in recent years. We’ve had a number of productive sessions with this large group…skate speeds are way more exciting with a crowded pack, and even just warmup drills and fun relays take on a new, more race-like feel when there’s a chaotic start and elbows flying.

Here is some media of the fall group in action:

You may have noticed Coach Adam’s droning monotone on some of our Youtube clips…apologies for that! I’ve been putting together some more instructional videos to compliment our growing suite of hiphop and classic rock-infused training “edits”. On the MNC homepage you’ll find a new dropdown menu titled “Resources”. Here you’ll find these videos grouped into playlists that are easy to navigate: Technique Drills and Equipment and Waxing

The Technique Drills library includes narrated videos of some of our favorite drills for rollerskis, snow skis, and on-foot.

The Equipment and Waxing library is probably a little more varied…this playlist can include anything from waxing how-to clips all the way to crazy training inventions and tools that Coach Adam has dreamed up.

Both libraries are set to grow as the seasons progress, so be sure to check back often!

Masters race opportunity this weekend

Calling all MNC Masters and friends! Are you interested in a 5k running race this Saturday, September 10th?

Burlington XC Invite

The Burlington High School invite is one of the biggest XC races in the fall. But BEFORE all the crazy action of the HS racing takes place, there is an open citizens race at 9am. The MNC Junior team will be competing, and MNC Masters are welcome and encouraged to sign up as well!

Look for the MNC tent near the start area at North Beach and, if you can, wear an MNC t-shirt to represent the club! Adam will be on-hand at the tent with several shirts of various sizes for sale ($10-15 donation to the club) if you are looking for new training/racing threads.
