SUMMARY:Skis due for Caldwell Sport stonegrinding
DESCRIPTION:September is well underway\, and it’s time for the annual ski grinding action! \nMNC delivers skis to Caldwell Sport in Putney for stonegrinding. \n \nWhat is stonegrinding? Put simply\, stonegrinding removes an incredibly thin top layer of your ski base while also applying a new pattern. This is all done with an incredibly-expensive\, finely-tuned machine using special stones\, depths\, speeds\, and pressures. If it sounds complicated\, that’s because it is! But you only need to know the outcome\, which is that a freshly stoneground ski will: \n-Be much much easier to wax because the base will be flat and even. This means it will be faster \n-Hold wax better due to this even distribution of material and opened “pores” that were previously damaged by heat from irons or corks \n-Repel moisture better with a new pattern and structure \nMost skiers only assume that stonegrinding “gets the scratches out” and while this is true for very minor dings and blemishes\, stonegrinding won’t necessarily make a base look perfectly new. And more often than not\, it isn’t the scratches that are slowing your ski down: it’s all those passes with an iron\, all that dirt that you can’t see in the base\, and all the uneven rises and falls at a minuscule level from repeated use and abuse. \nWith the transition to non-fluoro racing\, flat bases and fast bases have never been more critical. \nHere is a simple rule: \nIf your skis have not been stoneground and you have raced on them for two years in a row\, they should probably get ground before this season. Even if they do not have scratches\, they are likely to have thermal damage and wear. This is ESPECIALLY true for race skis\, which have likely seen a lot of action from hot irons and roto-implements used in racing.  \nOur coaches have some detailed knowledge of Junior skis from the past race season\, so if you are a Junior and are interested to know if you’d benefit from some stonegrinding please reach out. Masters\, don’t hesitate to reach out either! \nSo\, how does this all work? \n1) Fill out the form below to indicate # of pairs\, grind options\, and personal info by SEPTEMBER 30th \n2) Deliver skis to Adam any time before SEPTEMBER 30th (reach out to coordinate a drop-off)\, or stop by the MNCC on Wednesday evenings between 5 and 8pm to drop-off at our headquarters!  \n3) Adam will drive skis down to Caldwell Sport\, and pick them up when done (usually before Thanksgiving) \n4) Individuals will be billed by the club and can submit payment via all our usual means (online form\, or check made out to MNC) \n5) Stonegrind cost includes rate for grinding\, plus transport of skis to/from Putney and the involved labor/admin steps. Individual grinds from Caldwell Sport are $100/pair\, but with a batch of skis from our club there should be a discount. The more skis we bring\, the bigger the discount! \nSkis will be returned to owners upon receiving payment \nNeed some suggestions for grinds? Zach helped lay out his best options for various numbers of skis and I have utilized that info on the form. If you only have one skate or classic pair\, for example\, chose the “Universal” option. Most of us\, if we have a 2nd pair of either skate or classic\, are utilizing a specific “warm” pair which is also an option to select. \nMNC Caldwell Grind Order ’24 \nLooking for used skis\, or looking to part with skis or gear? Mark your calendars for the MNC Ski and Gear Swap on October 12 (dropoff) and 13th (swap)  \nA typical MNC batch lined-up for loading and delivery in Adam’s garage!

SUMMARY:Masters trail run/hike Monroe Skyline
DESCRIPTION:You’ve been training all summer\, now let’s see what you can do!  Join the MNC Masters for a challenging point-to-point trail run or hike on the Long Trail’s scenic Monroe Skyline\, heading south from the App Gap (Route 17) to Lincoln Gap Road (trail map) – or whatever portion of that you’d like to tackle.  This will be a “no drop” outing\, and all running/hiking speeds are welcome!  The full point-to-point route is somewhere between 10.2 and 11.6 miles\, depending on which map you’re looking at\, with 2800 ft of elevation gain over four mountain peaks (Stark Mtn\, Mt Ellen\, Lincoln Peak\, and Mt Abe).  Meet 9am at the App Gap’s south-bound trailhead (trailhead map); parking is wherever you can find it near the top of the hill on Route 17. \nFor a shorter outing\, consider an out-and-back hike from Lincoln Gap Road (trailhead map) to the top of Mount Abraham (5.2 miles\, round trip) or beyond\, with your start timed to meet the point-to-pointers at the top of Mount Abe in the 11am to 11:30 range. \nDRIVERS NEEDED – We could use one or two drivers to help with the point-to-point route\, either to shuttle cars to Lincoln Gap beforehand\, or to pick up the point-to-pointers at Lincoln Gap and bring them back to their cars at the App Gap.  Maybe someone doing the out-and-back hike to Mt Abe could help with pick up?  Please post on Slack or email Katie Hill (khill@gmavt.net) if you can help with driving. \nRunners/hikers please RSVP by Friday 9/13 (even if a “maybe”) via Slack or email to Katie Hill (khill@gmavt.net) so that we have time to coordinate rides for the point-to-point participants and make sure everyone has a partner.  Indicate whether you plan to run or hike\, and which portion of the route you’ll be doing. \nCheck Slack for last minute changes!  Timing may need to be adjusted to accommodate the participants & transportation needs. \nQuestions?  Contact Katie Hill at khill@gmavt.net

SUMMARY:U16 Mountain Camp

Experienced U14 skiers are able to attend with coach permission. \nRollerskiing at U16 Mountain Camp in 2023 \nOften the first training camp experience for skiers of this age\, U16 Mountain Camp is focused on exploring new places and building connections with friends and teammates. \nSkate rollerski experience is necessary\, primarily from a safety perspective. The final makeup and experience of our camp group will determine how much rollerskiing factors into our schedule\, but at least some time will be devoted to the activity. We’ll also enjoy trail running\, hiking\, ski bounding\, and maybe even mountain biking if there’s an interest. \nU16 Mountain Camp has space for up to 10 athletes\, and is led by Coach Adam and Coach Kristen! You can register for the camp at the MNC Registration Page or by clicking the button below! \nThis camp runs Thurs-Sun (a day longer than years past)\, and is $349 with an option for a non-refundable deposit of $50\, with remainder due June 1. \nU16 Mountain Camp 2024 \nBlog post/recap from 2023 Camp \nPhoto Album: 2023 Camp \nSki bounding at Bromley\, 2023 camp \nOur camp in 2023 was held in Ludlow\, hit hard by flooding\, so we met with the town organizers to do some volunteer cleanup/strength training \n

SUMMARY:Skirack/Swenor Rollerski Orders Due
DESCRIPTION:MNC members and skiers\, \nSkirack has put together some special pricing for us with rollerskis! You can order Swenor skis from Skirack at the link below\, with submissions due May 13th. \nNote the inclusion of some #2/#3 speed wheel options on the Fiberglass Classic model…if you have been rollerskiing for a few years now (say\, if this is going to be your second pair of classic rollerskis) this slightly-slower wheelspeed is recommended as it is much more relatable to actual classic skiing. Double poling is more realistic\, and striding work is more effective. \nThe Fiberglass model also comes in a standard #2 front and back speed\, and all other models are #2 speed. \nOn the order form\, you can check out specific notes on models and descriptions which I put together. You can also view those descriptions directly by clicking here. \nClick the link below to submit your form for ski ordering through Skirack! Orders are due May 13th. \nSkirack Swenor Order Form

SUMMARY:End-Of-Season Event: Wax and Waffles
DESCRIPTION:Event Update: We’re setting up the party with food and waxing on the lower deck at Cochran’s. Dress warm\, bring rock skis or a sled for some fun on the ski hill. \nCraftsbury has closed-up for the season\, meaning our traditional end-of-season party needed to be called off. We’re sad to not have this fun event available to us\, but in its stead we have put together another opportunity to close-out the ’23/’24 season! \nWax n’ Waffles RSVP \nJoin us at Cochran’s on Sunday\, April 7th for “Waffles and Waxing” \nWe will have a group run option in the morning\, followed by a gathering in the baselodge. In a few different “waves” (though this is loose…if things are open\, people can just jump in) skiers and families can use a collection of MNC benches\, wax rollers\, irons\, cleaning tools\, scrapers\, and solvents to: \n\nClean kick zones\nApply summer storage wax\nClear off debris and gunk from sidewalls\nCheck bindings\, poles\, and skis for any broken parts\n\nThere will be waffles and hotdogs to enjoy inside or out\, slideshows and videos of the ski season\, and some talks from coaches. Lawn games outside if the weather is nice! \nNo fee for this event\, but we’ll have a donation box if you’d like to consider a contribution! Hope to see you there- \n-MNC Coaching Staff
