About Junior Spring Training

All MNC skiers and anyone planning to ski with the club must hold a Mansfield Nordic Club Membership. For MNC Membership information and to register CLICK HERE

The sweat-soaked, mud-caked, bug-infested days of summer may be the heart of the off-season training in the ski world, but spring is a critical transition time for fitness and prep for the year ahead!

For these spring training weeks we will be looking to get used to challenging our muscles in a dryland environment, and preparing for the increased work and intensity of summer. Sessions will be a mix of running, rollerskiing, strength work and games…plus some of our first larger/longer adventures as spring winds down and transitions into summer.

Schedule: May 7 thru Jun 22, 2024

Structure:

Training is open to all Junior-level skiers (U16, U18, U20) as well as rising U16 athletes.

Tuesday (4PM) / Thursday (4PM) / Saturday (10AM unless otherwise specified). Locations in and around Chittenden County to be determined prior to each week. Some morning sessions may be offered if athlete schedules allow.

Often as we move into June, additional sessions will start being scheduled on days like Wednesday and Sunday!

Training will be posted on the Junior Training Plan. For access to the password-protected Junior Training Plan, please register for current programming.

General outline:

Tuesdays: Running, with a focus on warmup and mobility + injury prevention drills. May include some intensity such as track repeats or threshold miles.

Thursdays: Rollerskiing with specific strength, technique drills, base fitness at community locations such as Allen Brook School and Cochran Rd.

Saturdays: Hiking, Nor-Pine, long run, or other long distance event, with the potential for longer travel days such as trail running excursions or mountain biking at more distant venues.

Details:

• Weekday sessions are mostly distance-focused endurance activities: introducing rollerskiing for the season with light technique and video work, building a base of running mileage, and focusing on general all-around strength training including band work and mobility.

• Athletes with high school sports conflicts are encouraged to communicate on the best day(s) to attend, if applicable. Thursday rollerskiing would be a great compliment to the heavy running schedule of track and field athletes! We may pick the day (Tues or Thurs) with better overall weather to rollerski, and stay on foot if weather is rainy or inclement.

• Saturday activities may be more time and travel-intensive but offer a chance for more unique and varied workouts like spring skiing, hiking, or maybe a combination of those activities, as well as other adventures that refresh and inspire before the more structured training of traditional over-distance workouts.
