Club Relay Championships (and Spring Fling!)

This was a busy late-season weekend that featured the inaugural New England Club Relay Championships, hosted by our club! With ample snow, amazing trails, and great support, the Relays were a ton of fun and brought out a LOT of competitors. In a great display of the depth and health of the Vermont ski scene, some competitors had recently returned from All-American performances at NCAA Championships, while some were jumping into their first ski race ever!

Racers from elementary school to Masters age churned up the trails on teams with names that ranged from intimidating (“Jacked-Up Jim and the Wrecking Crew”) to self-deprecating (“MANSA: Moderately Athletic Nordic Ski Association”). Everyone put the hammer down on classic or skate legs and champions were crowned!

The club and racers can’t thank Craftsbury enough for helping make this event happen. From grooming to race setup to volunteers on course and off, there it nothing that the Craftsbury Outdoor Center doesn’t excel at. Many thanks also go out to Jim Fredericks who first brought up the idea of this event and made it a reality.

Sunday was the annual Spring Fling event, a race which many MNC members also contested. With beautiful weather and a tasty BBQ it really capped off the weekend on a great note! You can find results from both Saturday and Sunday’s events below.

Here are a few photos from Gary Solow, with the entire album linked at the bottom. Enjoy!

Action at the start: 3 Juniors who really don’t like to use kickwax. All three here just double-poled the classic course…Will and Brandon on skate skis, Glueck on “shiny” skis or “blank” skis, which are classic skis wax entirely for glide like a skate ski

Classic specialists Karen and Ellie!

Monica and Renate rocking some matching team colors

BKL, Juniors, and Masters…all in the same race!

Ali tagging off to Aidan, who was soon being chased out on course by Adam 😉

Steve and Steve, part of the Wrecking Crew

Call for rollerskis!

russiaroller

All,

The warm spring weather is here and we are gearing up for another great season of rollerskiing. Some love it, some hate it, but everyone agrees that it is a darn good way to ski your best come winter!

There are a number of skis that were rented last summer, many of which are still floating around the MNC community. Before our summer training programs start we’d like to get a handle on all of the pairs in order to take inventory and possibly make some improvements (new wheels where needed, for example).

If you have a pair of MNC rollerskis in your garage, closet, wax room or car, please contact coach Adam to work out a time/place to meet and return them for inventory.

Even better, if you have a pair (or even spare parts) that you would like to donate to the club, please also let me know!

Thanks…we will be hitting the pavement soon!

Range Closed For Season/Bonus Skiing Days

The winter started out slowly but finished with some of the best skiing in years. The ski trails at the range are closed for the spring but we may have some other ski outings lead by club members or coaches. (if you have a trip you want to lead or have others join you contact Rick or Tim and have it emailed to the club or posted on the blog)

Like this one – Tuesday April 1st.

BONUS DAY!! WITH COACH PENNIE RAND
Spring Ski Tour, Fun on Snow and possible HOT Sugar on snow too!

When:   Meet at the Cochran’s Ski Area parking lot area at 3:30
What:   Ski tour with Pennie up into the Slope Side Syrup Cochran Family Sugarbush and onto the ridge.

Great skate picture – full leg extension

CHeck out the picture below from a recent WOrld Cup sprint race. You’ve got 3 of the best sprinters in the world from 3 different countries all frozen in nearly the exact same pose. Far left (black/yellow) is Denise Herrmann off Germany, in the center (#23 in redwhite/blue) is Marit Bjorgen of Norway, and far right in the black is Kikkan Randall of the good ‘ole USofA.

Note just how far they’ve extended the leg they are pushing off of (their right leg [to our left in the picture]). Their foot is waaaaayyy outside of their hips. You gotta push off and extend to fully employ your gluteus maximus.

Norway's Marit Bjørgen powers to the finish while trying to hold off Germany's Denise Herrmann (l) and two Norwegian teammates, Ingvild Flugstad Østberg (1) and Maiken Caspersen Falla (14). Bjørgen ended up winning by 0.43 seconds, Herrmann was second, Østberg third, and Falla fourth. American Kikkan Randall (r) placed fifth and Slovenia's Katja Visnar (2) took sixth. Excellent BKL Coaching Blog

This blog is written by an important coach in the Canadian development pipeline. He works most closely with young athletes (BK through early junior). All of his old posts are worth reading and he raises some excellent quetsions and provides useful insight for coaches — especially our MNC coaches working with BK athletes.
